The Glenlivet® City Links Kicks Off Second Year in Windy City
Nine-hole Urban-Scaled Scottish Golf Course Reopens in Riverside Chicago
CHICAGO (October 5, 2006) – For years, dyeing the river green on St. Patrick's Day has been the biggest event on the Chicago River; The Glenlivet will rally back with a different sporting event on the riverfront, bringing the greens and roughs of a traditional Scottish golf course indoors for urban golf enthusiasts. Complete with nine challenging holes and a virtual driving range, The Glenlivet City Links will be housed in the historical Reid Murdoch building for just seven days before continuing on its national tour. In Chicago only, Jim Cryle, Master Distiller of The Glenlivet, will be on hand to demonstrate how a real Scotsman plays golf: bedecked in tartan and plaid.
This year, The Glenlivet is proud to partner with Ravinia Festival as their patron of the arts. There are no set green fees to play on The Glenlivet City Links; instead, a â??pay-as-you-will' policy has been implemented to benefit the Ravinia Festival. The oldest outdoor concert series in North America is held every summer from June to September in Highland Park, Ill., and aims to educate, expand cultural options, and encourage involvement in world class music.
"Scotland is not only home to The Glenlivet, the most extraordinary Scotch whisky you can find, but it is also the birthplace of one of the most celebrated games in the world," said Andrew Nash, Brand Director of The Glenlivet. "Not everyone has the opportunity to play on the world-famous courses in Scotland, so we are delighted to bring The Glenlivet City Links back to Chicago for a second time."
Designed by Arne Lundmark, president of one of the premiere golf course design companies in the country, and Thomas Shöner, renowned interior and architectural designer, The Glenlivet City Links will be customized to fit the various lofts and warehouses in each destination it travels to. The course will feature nine challenging holes and a traditional clubhouse that will host the public for seven days in each city. This impressive course is beautifully landscaped with water hazards, bridges and carefully crafted greens curving around sand traps, providing golfers in urban settings with limited access to courses, with an opportunity to golf on a piece of Scotland without leaving the city's center.
For the second year, The Glenlivet City Links further enhances the experience with the introduction of a virtual driving range, where players can select the shots range, and additionally follow the statistics of shots. Even casual golfers will be delighted with the side view of the shot as well as the trajectory of the ball's flight, both of which can be displayed to study the shot and to learn the swing-and-shot technique.
Reservations are not necessary for participation in the City Links: the course is played on a first-come basis.
